Abstract

The process of the parent Specification for rendering textile materials resistant to creasing is applied to the treatment of materials composed wholly or partially of bast fibres such as flax, linen, or hemp, and is further modified in that the materials are subjected to a thorough swelling and shrinking treatment, and then, after being brought to a dry or substantially dry condition, are subjected to impregnation with the partial condensate of urea or thiourea and formaldehyde or other aldehyde buffered to a constant pH value of 4-6. After the shrinking treatment the materials may be stretched before impregnation with the synthetic resin preparation. In an example, linen fabric is treated with caustic soda solution while free from tension so that it swells and shrinks. It may then be soured, washed and dried, or it may be first stretched to dimensions which are still less than the original dimensions. The dried fabric is then impregnated with a partial condensate of urea and formaldehyde in the presence of a buffering substance so that a pH of 4-6 is maintained during impregnation, drying and baking. It is finally subjected to a mercerizing treatment. Specifications 304,900, [Class 15 (ii)], and 437,361 also are referred to.
