Abstract

Yarn or fabric containing or consisting of wool is set in a desired shape or dimension by treating it with a solution having a pH of 3-9 containing a swelling agent having hydrogen band breaking properties and reducing properties to swell the fibres in the yarn or fabric, the swelling being carried out for a period which is inversely proportional to the temperature and concentration of the solution and which is from 2 seconds to 24 hours, fixing the yarn or fabric in the final shape and dimension in which it is to set and then deswelling the yarn or fabric in this shape and dimension. The swelling agent may be monoethanolamine sulphite or thiourea dioxide or it may comprise urea, guanidine, monoethanolamine, sodium thiocyanate or ammonium thiocyanate in admixture with sodium sulphite and/or bisulphite. The swelling agent may be applied as a solution in water or an organic solvent, e.g. methanol, ethanol, propanol, isopropanol, dioxane or mixtures thereof with each other or with water. The material may be treated with the swelling solution during all of the swelling time or impregnated with the solution and then stored. After treatment with the swelling solution the yarn or fabric may be fixed in a flat, creased, pleated or imprinted state by mechanical treatment, e.g. milling, stretching, folding, mangling or embossing, the deformations being set during the deswelling step. Deswelling may be effected at 0-100 DEG C with water, with water mixed with an acid, e.g. acetic or sulphuric acid, or with an organic solvent, e.g. methanol, petroleum, ethanol or trichlorethylene, optionally in admixture with water, the deswelling solution optionally containing a reagent increasing the cross-bridging, e.g. formaldehyde, and the deswelling agents optionally subsequently being removed by rinsing with organic solvents, e.g. petroleum, trichlorethylene, toluene, glycol or glycerol. Alternatively deswelling may be effected by drying when the swelling agents are volatile, e.g. at 0-200 DEG C for 5 seconds to 24 hours. Stretch fabrics may be produced by the process.
