Abstract

A composition for use in setting animal fibre, especially wool or hair, comprises a water-soluble sulphite or bisulphite and a water-soluble salt of a sulphuric ester of a higher fatty alcohol, e.g. sodium, potassium or ammonium salts of dodecyl sulphuric p ester, hexadecyl sulphuric ester or the sulphuric ester of oleic alcohol. Soda, borax, soap, sodium citrate, abrasives e.g. fuller's earth, water-soluble neutral organic compounds e.g. urea or cane sugar, or inorganic salts may be added. The examples comprise mixtures of sodium cetyl sulphate, sodium sulphite or potassium metabisulphite, and urea, borax or cane sugar. The composition may be dissolved in water before use and may be applied to hair prior to permanent waving, to loose wool during scouring, or to worsted cloth prior to millings.
