Abstract

552,286. Hair waving &c. CHAMBERLAIN, N. H. July 24, 1941, No. 9368. Divided out of 552,285. [Class 15 (ii)] [Also in Group VIII] In a process for applying a permanent form or set to, or removing stress from, material made of keratin, the material is treated with an acid solution of a reducing agent, preferably a bisulphite or metabisulphite with or without alcohol, and then treated with a non-irritant alkaline solution containing an organic base or a non-irritant alkaline buffered solution. A suitable solution of an organic base consists of commercial triethanolamine and water to which may be added the sodium salt of isopropyl naphthalene sulphonic acid or other wetting agent, the preferred pH being 9 to 13. The general treatment of the hair in hair waving is as described in Specification 552,285. A suitable buffered solution with a pH of about 11 may be made by mixing a solution of disodium hydrogen phosphate with a solution of sodium hydroxide. Specification 453,700 also is referred to.
