552,285. Treating textiles with liquids ; hair waving. CHAMBERLAIN, N. H. July 24, 1941, No. 9367. [Class 15 (ii)] [Also in Group VIII] In a process for applying a permanent form or set to, or removing stress from, fibrous substances containing keratin such as wool or hair and especially for the permanent waving of hair by treatment with an acid reducing agent such as described in Specification 453,700, the keratin is subjected to a drying operation to remove free water films after treatment with an acid solution of a reducing agent and before treatment with an alkaline solution preferably at a pH of 9 to 13. An oxidising agent such as hydrogen peroxide may be applied before, during or after the treatment with alkali. In one example of permanent waving the hair is treated with a lotion comprising two solutions one of which consists of a substance known under the Registered Trade Mark "Igepon T," gum karaya and if desired glucose, all suspended in alcohol, the second solution consisting of sodium bisulphite. The hair is then heated and thoroughly rinsed in water or a shampoo such as sodium hexametaphosphate and subsequently dried. The dried hair is curled on a mandrel or otherwise waved and treated with an alkaline solution such as triethanolamine, water and the sodium salt of isopropyl naphthalene sulphonic acid. The hair is then warmed, removed from the curlers if used, and may then be treated with an oxidising solution. Specification 552,286 also is referred to.
