Abstract

Hair or other keratinous fibre is dyed by applying thereto a composition containing an azobenzene which contains as substituents in one of the benzene rings at least two hydroxy groups or an amino group and at least one hydroxy group, the other benzene ring being unsubstituted or carrying at least one hydroxy group. Specified azobenzenes are 2:3:4-, 3:4:5-, 2:4:6-, 2:4:21- and 2:4:41-trihydroxyazobenzenes, 2:3:4:41-, 3:4:5:41- and 2:4:6:41-tetrahydroxyazobenzenes, 2-amino-4:21 or -4:41-dihydroxyazobenzenes and 4-amino-2:21- or 2:41-dihydroxyazobenzenes. The preparation of some of these monoazo compounds by the usual coupling procedure is mentioned. The azobenzenes are applied in the form of aqueous solutions having a preferred pH of 7-11. The solutions may contain salts such as sodium bicarbonate, sodium carbonate and mono- or di-sodium phosphates or alkalies such as sodium hydroxide or ammonia. In an example 2-amino-4:41-dihydroxyazobenzene is dissolved in ammonia solution which is diluted with water and the solution obtained applied to white hair. After rinsing, shampooing, rinsing again and drying a reddish-yellow colouring is obtained. Further examples are specified.
