Abstract

1452986 Preparing stilbene-azo dyes E I DU PONT DE NEMOURS & CO 6 Feb 1974 [7 Feb 1973] 05433/74 Heading C4P Stilbene -azo dyes are prepared by tetrazotizing a diaminostilbenesulphonic acid, isolating the resulting tetrazonium salt, slurrying the tetrazonium salt with water and reacting with at least one coupler. Preferred couplers are naphthalene sulphonic acids having an amino and/or hydroxy substituent, phenols, aminobenzenesulphonic acids and aminobenzenecarboxylic acids. The preferred diaminostilbenesulphonic acid is 4,4<SP>1</SP> - diaminostilbene - 2,2<SP>1</SP> - disulphonic acid. The water-solubilizing cations preferred are a lithium base and/or an alkanolamine. In the preparation of solutions, urea is preferably used as a stabilizing aid. The aqueous dye compositions prepared by the above process are used to dye cellulosic materials, particularly cotton and paper, and leather.
