Abstract

1409326 Preparation of stilbene-azo dyestuffs IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd 7 Jan 1974 [9 Jan 1973] 1126/73 Heading C4P Stilbene-azo dyes are prepared by condensing 4,4<SP>1</SP> - dinitro - 2,2<SP>1 </SP>- stilbenedisulphonic acid or a salt thereof with an aminoazo compound in an aqueous alkaline medium containing lithium hydroxide. Preferably the dilithium salt of 4,41 - dinitro - 2,21 - stilbenedisulphonic acid is used. Concentrated aqueous solutions of the products may be obtained and are used for dyeing cotton and paper. The orange dye C.I. Direct Orange 34 (C.I. 40215) may be obtained in the form of a lithium salt by the above process using 4<SP>1</SP>-aminoazobenzene-4-sulphonic acid as the aminoazo compound.
