Abstract

A composition for applying to a last, to facilitate the removal of a shoe &c. therefrom, comprises wax and finely-divided mica in an aqueous medium, the weight ratio of mica to wax being between 2:1 and 3.75:1. The composition preferably has a solids content of 30-50 per cent by weight, of which the mica and wax constitute about 90 per cent. An aqueous emulsion of paraffin wax (melting point 45 DEG -70 DEG C), ethylene glycol monostearate, or glyceryl monostearate is made using as emulsifying agent sodium lauryl sulphate or a sodium salt of a sulphonated petroleum product, the preferred proportions being 3-8 parts by weight of wax to 1 part of emulsifying agent; the emulsion may also contain a thickening agent, e.g. sodium carboxy methyl cellulose, sodium alginate, methyl cellulose, or gum tragacanth. This emulsion is mixed with an aqueous dispersion of mica, in which the dispersing agent may be a sodium salt of an alkyl aryl sulphonic acid or a reaction product of a higher fatty acid, e.g. oleic acid, with triethanolamine, diethanolamine, diethyl amine, or morpholine. The composition is applied to the last and on drying leaves an opaque pulpy coating comprising mica platelets and wax.
