Abstract

Solid or semi-solid compositions containing dispersed methyl cellulose or methyl hydroxy-ethyl cellulose are prepared by mixing together dehydrated calcium lactate, a quantity of water greater than that required to rehydrate the lactate, and the cellulose derivative to be dispersed, or by heating a mixture of hydrated calcium lactate and water, for instance to 90 DEG or 100 DEG C., and incorporating the cellulose derivative into the mixture at any stage. In an example, a 4 per cent aqueous dispersion of methyl hydroxyethyl cellulose, water and dehydrated calcium lactate are mixed together to give a stiff paste.ALSO:A solid or semi-solid detergent composition is made by mixing together dehydrated calcium lactate, a quantity of water greater than that required to rehydrate the lactate and a detergent, or by heating a mixture of hydrated calcium lactate and water, for instance to 90 or 100 DEG C., and incorporating the detergent into the mixture at any stage. The latter method may take the form of adding hydrated calcium lactate to a heated aqueous solution containing the detergent. The detergent may be soap or a synthetic detergent, or a mixture of both. Synthetic detergents specified are those sold under the Registered Trade Marks "Teepol," "Empicol L.Z." and "Lorol," and long-chain alkyl sulphates and sulphonates in general. Such compositions may also contain liquid paraffin, mineral oils, waxes such as the polyethylene glycol wax sold under the Registered Trade Mark "Carbowax," glycerol, sorbitol, mannitol, erythritol, polyvinyl alcohol, triethanolamine, stearic acid, lactic acid, sodium sulphate, calcium chloride, magnesium chloride, sodium lactate, starch, gum tragacanth, methyl cellulose, and "Tylose" (Registered Trade Mark). The compositions may be formed into tablets, blocks, flakes, powders or pastes. In an example, sulphonated "Lorol," glycerine, gum tragacanth, anhydrous calcium lactate and water are mixed together, the composition hardening during the mixing operation to give a solid detergent cake. In another example calcium lactate (5H2O) and water are heated at 95 DEG C. until solution is complete; starch is then added, followed by "Teepol" in powder form, and the mixture is allowed to cool, whereupon it forms a hard solid mass.ALSO:Solid or semi-solid compositions useful as bases in the formulation of cosmetic creams are made by mixing together dehydrated calcium lactate, a quantity of water greater than that required to rehydrate the lactate, and a substance to be dispersed such as liquid paraffin or methyl hydroxyethyl cellulose. Alternatively, a mixture of hydrated calcium lactate and water may be heated, for instance to 90 or 100 DEG C., and the substance to be dispersed incorporated into the mixture at any p stage. In an example dehydrated calcium lactate, liquid paraffin and water are mixed together. The composition sets to a lard-like mass in 24 hours. In a further example, a 4 per cent. aqueous dispersion of methyl hydroxyethyl cellulose, water and dehydrated calcium lactate are mixed together to give a stiff lard-like paste.
