Abstract

Hard compositions suitable for toilet use contain (1) a transparent alkali-metal soap, (2) a triethanolamine soap of a fatty acid of at least 18 carbon atoms, and (3) an excess of triethanolamine of 1-2 mols. per mol. of fatty acid in the triethanolamine soap. The excess of triethanolamine is said to be combined with the triethanolamine soap in the form of an ether, and equations are given showing the reactions which are believed to occur. The compositions may also include an alkyl sulphonate, an alkylaryl sulphonate or a sulphated fatty alcohol. The compositions may be made by mixing a transparent alkali-metal soap with a fatty acid of at least 18 carbon atoms, e.g. stearic or oleic acid, and triethanolamine in a proportion of 2-3 mols. per mol. of fatty acid, and heating the mixture to 100-120 DEG C. until a homogeneous product is obtained. Alternatively, a transparent alkali-metal soap may be mixed with a triethanolamine soap of a fatty acid of at least 18 carbon atoms and with triethanolamine in a proportion of 1-2 mols. per mol. of fatty acid in the triethanolamine soap, and the mixture is then heated to 100-120 DEG C. As a further alternative, a vegetable or animal fat or oil is saponified with excess caustic soda at 100-120 DEG C. in the presence of triethanolamine, and a fatty acid of at least 18 carbon atoms is then added in such proportion that 2-3 mols. of triethanolamine are present for each mol. of fatty acid not required to neutralize the excess of caustic alkali. Suitable oils and fats for use in this modification are olive oil, castor oil, palm-kernel oil, cocoanut oil and beef tallow, but mixtures containing about 30 per cent. of castor oil are preferred; addition of a fatty acid of at least 18 carbon atoms to the oil or fat may be advantageous. Examples are given in which (1) a mixture of a transparent alkali-metal soap, stearic acid, triethanolamine and sodium lauryl sulphate is heated at 110 DEG C. until it is homogeneous, and the product is made into cakes or bars; (2) a mixture of beef tallow, cocoanut oil, castor oil, caustic soda solution and triethanolamine is heated at 100-110 DEG C. until saponification is complete, and stearic acid is then added and heating is continued until a homogeneous product is obtained, which is formed into cakes.
