Abstract

A stable powdered or moulded soap which does not effloresce and which is free from alkali carbonate is prepared by intimately mixing a fatty acid, at a temperature above its melting point, with approximately twice the amount of calcined alkali carbonate theoretically necessary for complete saponification, and adding to the homogeneous mixture from 2 to 50 per cent of water, calculated on the amount of fatty acid employed. Salts which do not decompose alkali bicarbonates, e.g. di-sodium phosphate, sodium pyrophosphate, sodium bicarbonate and borax, and bleaching agents such as sodium perborate, persulphate or hydrosulphite may be added to the water. The reaction products may be mixed with liquid or solid soap, resinic acids, sulphonated fats, oils, fat alcohols, dispersing or wetting agents, paraffin or other wax, petroleum jelly, percompounds, solvents, perfumes or other usual addition or filling agents for soap. The process may be carried out in a continuous manner, the reaction mass, after the addition of the water, being led over milling and/or moulding rollers or worms which may be heated and/or cooled. Specified fatty acids are those from palm oil, palm kernel oil, ground nut oil, coconut oil and mixtures thereof, and specified additions are rose perfume, methylcellulose and cyclonol.
