Abstract

Water-soluble salts of phytic acid (inositol hexaphosphoric acid) are used as builders in detergent compositions, containing soaps and (or) synthetic organic detergents. Specified salts are the alkali-metal, ammonium or substituted ammonium salts. Specified soaps are the alkali-metal, ammonium or substituted ammonium salts of fatty acids containing 8-18 carbon atoms, including synthetic fatty acids obtained by the oxidation of petroleum or from carbon monoxide and hydrogen, and the corresponding salts of resin acids and (or) naphthenic acids. Specified synthetic detergents are (1) anionic detergents such as water-soluble salts of sulphuric-acid reaction products of alkyl and substituted alkyl compounds containing 8-18 carbon atoms in the alkyl group, e.g. alkyl sulphates or sulphonates, alkyl benzene sulphonates, sulphoethyl oleate, alkyl sulphoacetates, monoglyceride sulphates or sulphonates, glyceryl alkyl ether sulphonates and sulphoethyl-N methyl oleic amide, and (2) non-ionic detergents such as the reaction products of higher alcohols and higher fatty acids with alkylene oxides. From 0.2 to 15 parts of phytate may be used per part of detergent. The compositions may contain other appropriate ingredients, e.g. sodium sulphate, higher fatty alcohols, such as lauryl alcohol, fatty acid nitriles, such as myristonitrile and fatty acid amides such as myristic amide or lauryl ethanolamide. They may be prepared as solutions or dispersions or in bar, flake, thread, powder or spray-dried form. Examples and experimental results are given. Specification 431,682, [Group IV], is referred to.
