Abstract

Detergent tablets comprise (a) a major proportion, usually 55-84%, of soap, suitably sodium or potassium soaps from tallow, palm kernel oil or coconut oil, or mixtures thereof, (b) a minor proportion, generally 15-30% of a water soluble fatty acyl aminoalkane sulphonate, and (c) a water-soluble salt of an aliphatic monocarboxylic or hydroxymonocarboxylic acid of 1-8 carbon atoms, usually in an amount of 0.2-10%. Component (b) is preferably sodium palm kernel fatty acyl aminomethane sulphonate or sodium partlyhardened tallow fatty acyl-N-methylaminoethane sulphonate. Component (c) is preferably sodium formate or lactate. The compositions may also include, as scum-reducing aids, up to 10% of an alkylphenol having 3-10 alkyl carbon atoms, and ethers of such phenol with polyhydric alcohols such as glycerol, partial esters of polyhydric alcohols with fatty acid having 10-18 carbon atoms, saturated or unsaturated fatty alcohols of 10-18 carbon atoms, or amides or alkanolamides of fatty acids of 10-18 carbon atoms. Lanolin, stearin, rosin, dye, opacifiers, perfume and stabilizers may also be present. It is preferred to make the tablets by stirring the soap (a) as a solution into an aqueous mixture of (b) at 75-85 DEG C., adding the scum-reducing aid, if any, in liquid form, and then finally adding (c), either as a fine powder or as a concentrated solution, after which the mixture is thoroughly mixed, dried, cooled, milled, plodded and stamped. According to the Provisional Specification, (c) may be a water-soluble salt of an aromatic carboxylic acid, such as benzoic acid, a lower alkane sulphonic acid, an aromatic monosulphonic acid, such as toluene or xylene sulphonic acid, or other monocarboxylic or monosulphonic acid salts.
