Abstract

561,294. Detergent compositions. SNELL, F. D. June 4, 1942, No. 7613. Convention date, Dec. 30, 1941. [Class 91] A detergent composition comprises a mixture of a water-soluble ionisable anionic active surface-active compound and a borate material containing sodium oxide and boron trioxide, fully combined with each other or not, in the proportion of 1 to 3 mols of Na2O to 1 mol of B2O3, the borate material being present in the proportion of at least approximately 1 part to 1 part of the surface-active compound. The surface-active compounds specified comprise soap, including sodium abietate, sodium, lauryl sulphate, the sodium salts of ceryl benzene sulphonate, succinic ester sulphonates, and the material known under the Registered Trade Mark " Igepon T." The borate material may be sodium metaborate. 1 to 5 parts of the borate material are mixed with each part of the surface-active agent. The borate material may be prepared by mixing at least 2 mols of NaOH for each mol of borax, the proportion of NaOH being increased to prepare the more basic borate material, and then evaporating the solution, the residue being finally heated and milled as desired, the mixture content of the borate material should not exceed 50 per cent. Crude borate ore may be used instead of borax, provided the proper ratio of alkali to boron obtained and insoluble matter is filtered out. Other ingredients may be added to the compositions, in particular a calcium and magnesium sequestration agent such as sodium tripolyphosphate, sodium metaphosphate, tetrasodium pyrophosphate, and sodium hexametaphosphate; an additional alkaline material such as sodium metasilicate ; neutral salts such as sodium chloride and sodium sulphate ; or a water-soluble binder when the compositions are made in block form such as dextrine and casein. The products may be prepared in powder, granular, bead, cake or bar form and in particular in a granular form wherein one of the ingredients, such as the borate material, is' coated with the other ingredient by tumbling the former in a moist granular condition with the latter in a dry condition in a rotated drum. In preparing this form of the compositions, the initial materials for preparing the borate material, viz : NaOH and borax or boric acid may be used, the NaOH being in moist granules which is more or less converted to the borate material which is then coated with the other ingredient such as soap. Specifications 27572/12, 180,957, and 319,807 [all in Class 91], are referred to.
