Abstract

Shaped products, such as tablets, bars or flakes, containing non-soapy detergents are made from mixtures of the detergents with a binder comprising a normally solid higher aliphatic acid, preferably stearic acid, an ester gum, and a wax, preferably a paraffin wax, having a melting point of 45-70 DEG C. Before the detergent is mixed with the binder, a basic substance, e.g. an alkali carbonate or an organic base, may be added to the binder, the soap thus produced helping to disperse the detergent when the latter is added. Alternatively, another emulsifier may be included in the binder. Other specified optional additions to the compositions are starch, sodium silicate, carboxymethyl cellulose, and fillers such as calcium carbonate, kaolin, clay, talc or silica sand. The process is particularly applicable to alkylaryl sulphonates, but other non-soapy detergents mentioned are sulphonated fatty alcohols and polyphosphate preparations. The preferred method of mixing the components is described, and examples of suitable compositions are given.
