Abstract
550,757. Detergents. LEVER BROS. and UNILEVER, Ltd. Aug. 12, 1941, No. 10234. Convention date, Aug. 14, 1940. [Class 91] A non-soapy detergent is produced in bar or cake form from a mass of the detergent free from material proportions of inorganic salts by thoroughly working and agitating the mass at a temperature at which it is plastic or semi-fluid and thereafter forming the mass into bars or cakes. The proportion of inorganic salts in the resulting bar or cake is less than 15 per cent. The detergent mass may contain a proportion of soap, such as coconut oil soap, the proportion being as high as 70 per cent. in some compositions. The groups of non-soapy detergents specified comprise the products known under the Registered Trade Mark "Gardinol," i.e. sulphated higher fatty alcohols such as the sodium salt of lauryl sulphate ; the products known under the Registered Trade Mark "Igepon" such as the fatty acid esters of hydroxy-ethane sulphonic acid ; and the sulphocarboxylic acid esters of alcohol amines. The detergent mass is preferably worked at temperatures between 100 and 200 F., the mass being heated prior or during the mixing operation. The latter is conducted in a chamber closed to the atmosphere, batch or continuous working being used. Suitable apparatus are described in U.S.A. Specifications 1,200,070 and 2.048,286. The mass may be aerated by a compatible gas, such as air, during this operation, sufficient being introduced if desired to produce a floating product. Pressure working is preferred, particularly when aerating, pressures up to about 100 lbs. per square inch, suitably 25 lbs. per square inch, being used. The moisture content of the mass may vary but usually 10-20 per cent is satisfactory. When the mass is completely mixed, it is released or discharged by extrusion into a mould or form-imparting means where it may be cooled and solidified while retaining its continuous structure.
