Abstract

506,783. Treating textiles; waterproofing. TOOTAL BROADHURST LEE CO., Ltd., CORTEEN, H., and WOOD, F. C. Aug. 27, 1937, No. 20861/38. Divided application. [Classes 2 (ii) and 15 (ii)] (Also in Group VIII] Textile materials which have been rendered water-repellent by impregnation with an organic nitrogen compound which can be made from a tertiary nitrogen base, formaldehyde and a fatty alcohol, amine, amide or urethane containing at least ten carbon atoms, are treated with a neutral or alkaline swelling agent. The handle, strength and wearing properties are thereby improved. Suitable swelling agents are sodium and potassium hydroxide, cuprammonium hydroxide, quaternary ammonium bases, sulphonium bases, caustic alkalies with carbon bisulphide, and caustic alkalies with ethylene oxide for cellulosic materials, acetone and water for cellulose acetate materials, and caustic alkalies or ammonia for wool and silk materials. The materials may also be subjected to further textile finishing processes such as delustring, rendering crease-resisting. or shrinking. In an example, linen is made water-repellent by treatment with octadecyloxymethylpyridinium chloride or N - car - bomethoxyheptadecylaminomethylpyridinium chloride, wetted, and immersed in caustic soda solution. The swelling may also be applied to a material which has been made waterrepellent and impregnated with resin or a reactive aldehyde. In another example, linen is rendered water-repellent by means of octadecyloxymethylpyridinium chloride, immersed in caustic soda solution, impregnated with a lightly condensed solution prepared by refluxing urea with formaldehyde and ammonia, to which after cooling tartaric acid is added, and heated. Specification 466,817 is referred to.
