Abstract

772,367. Fireproofing textile materials. CIBA Ltd. Aug. 3, 1954 [Aug. 4, 1953], No. 22525/54. Class 140. Textile material which has been rendered flame-proof by the process disclosed in Specification 747,014, [Group IV (c)], is further treated with formaldehyde to enhance the fastness to washing of the flame-resistant dressing. The treatment may be carried out at 80-150‹ C. using an aqueous solution of formaldehyde. Gaseous formaldehyde, or compounds yielding formaldehyde such as para-formaldehyde or hexamethylene tetramine may also. be used. The formaldehyde solution may contain a small amount of a hardening catalyst. Examples describe treating with formaldehyde a cotton fabric which has been rendered flame-proof in the manner referred to. The fabric may be immersed in a bath at 90 ‹ C. containing water, formaldehyde and ammonium chloride; or it may be immersed in a cold bath containing water and formaldehyde followed by pressing and drying at 90‹ C.; or it may be steamed wet in the presence of formaldehyde at 120-130‹ C. under 1 atmosphere gauge pressure. If the fabric which has been treated with formaldehyde is subjected to alkaline washing (e.g. with soap and soda) it must subsequently be subjected to ion-exchange treatment, e.g. by immersion in a bath containing salts such as ammonium sulphate, chloride, carbonate, nitrate, diammonium phosphate or ethylene dihydrochloride, in order to restore the flame-resistant properties.
