Abstract

1389793 Flame retardant treatment of textiles AMERICAN CYANAMID CO 13 July 1973 [21 July 1972] 33615/73 Heading DIP A process for imparting flame-retardant properties to fibrous textile materials comprises (a) impregnating the textile material with an aqueous solution of at least one tetrakis (hydroxymethyl) phosphonium salt, to deposit from 1 to 10 percent of phosphonium phosphorus on the fabric; (b) drying the impregnated textile material, preferably at an elevated temperature, to a moisture content of between 3 and 20 percent without fixation of the finish; and (c) exposing the impregnated and dried textile material to gaseous ammonia, the process being carried out at the unadjusted pH of the solution of the phosphonium salt. The phosphonium salts used may be phosphates, acetates, oxalates, lactates, glycolates, malates or citrates, the first three and a phosphate/acetate combination being exemplified. The ammonia treatment may be carried out batchwise or by a continuous process, and at room temperature or a temperature above or below this. After the treatment, the fabric may be washed in a 5 percent aqueous solution of hydrogen peroxide to improve the durability of the finish. The material treated may be cotton, rayon, jute, ramie, or wool.
