Abstract

1317468 Fire proofing cellulosic materials COTTON PRODUCERS INSTITUTE 21 July 1970 [30 Sept 1969] 35269/70 Heading D1P Cellulosic material e.g. cotton, flax or cellulose acetate is made flame-retardant by treatment with a phosphonic acid of the formula: wherein R 1 is a lower alkyl group having from 1 to 4 carbon atoms and R 2 is hydrogen or a lower alkyl group having from 1 to 4 carbon atoms, and an amino compound selected from the group comprising cyanamide, methylolates cyanamide, methylolated melamines, methylolated cyanoguanidine and mixtures thereof. The preferred phosphonic acid is methyl phosphonic acid monomethyl ester and the preferred amino compound cyanamide. The preferred treatment involves treating the material at a pH below 1.5 and fixing the compounds by heating. The material may be in the form of fibres, filaments, yarns, threads and woven and non-woven fabrics. The cellulose material may be mixed with nylon, polyethylene terephthate, or viscose fibres.
