Abstract

1515223 Flame proofing fibres CIBAGEIGY AG 14 July 1976 [15 July 1975] 29412/76 Heading D1P [Also in Division C3R] Polyester fibres are flameproofed by adding a spirophosphonate of formula wherein R represents alkyl having 1 to 10C atoms, cycloalkyl having 5 to 7 C atoms, halogeno alkyl having 1 to 3 C atoms, alkenyl having 2 to 10 C atoms, phenyl or phenyl substituted by halogen, phenylalkyl having 7 to 9 C atoms or phenylalkenyl having 8 to 10 C atoms which can be halogenated in the phenyl radical, to the polyester, either before, during spinning in such an amount that the fibres contain 0.75 to 5% of phosphorus. The spirophosphonate can be added in pulverulent form to the polyester granulate prior to spinning in an extruder or it can be mixed with the polyester in molten form in an extruder and then granulated. Alternatively, the spiro phosphonate can be added to the polyester during production but after completion of polycondensation. The treated polyester fibres can be processed into yarns, tapes, fabrics, knitwear or non woven fabrics. The polyester fibres may be mixed with cotton or rayon fibres. The specification also discloses that a spirophosphonate and polyester solution may be applied to glass or cotton fabric.
