Abstract

1517652 Flame retardants for polymers VELSICOL CHEMICAL CORP 13 Jan 1976 45795/77 Divided out of 1517651 Headings C3K and C3R [Also in Division C2] A polymeric composition comprises a polymer and a flame-retarding amount of a compound I having the formula wherein (a) X and X1 are O or S and Y and Y1 are the same or different and are groups of the formula -N(R)(R1) wherein R and R1 are H, a monovalent hydrocarbon radical or a halogenated monovalent hydrocarbon radical, or (b) each of Y and Y1 is a 2,2-di-(bromomethyl)-3. chloropropoxy group and X and X1 both represent O atoms. Conventional additives and synergists, preferably antimony oxide, may also be present. The compound I may be added during polymerization or after polymerization, e.g. prior to moulding, or may be combined with the polymer when the latter is in the form of a textile filament, fibre or yarn. Examples are given in which certain specified compounds of Formula I are added to a polyurethane foamforming mixture comprising a polyoxypropylene triol and an 80/20 blend of 2,4 and 2,6-toluene diisocyanates as reactive constituents.
