Abstract

1,141,184. Strengthening glass fibres. J. P. STEVENS & CO. Inc. 8 Aug., 1967 [11 Aug., 1966], No. 36411/67. Heading C1M. [Also in Division D1] Siliceous fibrous material containing monovalent cations is desized with substantially no reduction in strength, by treatment with a composition containing at least one polyvalent cation together with at least one monovalent cation containing compound wherein the cation is potassium, sodium, rubidium or caesium or mixtures thereof and then heating the treated substrate until substantially all of the sizing is burnt off. The preferred polyvalent cations are calcium, strontium, barium and lanthanum and the treating composition preferably also contains an oxygen containing anion, nitrate, chlorate, sulphate and carbonate being among those specified. The sized fabrics may be treated with an aqueous solution of compounds containing the cations, or treated with a hot melt or granular form of such compounds, dried, heat treated as above, and then finished by conventional procedures, or alternatively salts containing the cations may be added to the size applied to the yarns, and after formation of the fabric it may be heat treated to effect desizing.
