Abstract

820,946. Proofing cellulosic fibres against bacteria. CIBA Ltd. Feb. 22, 1956 [Feb. 23, 1955], No. 5565/56. Addition to 745,638. Class 140. A process for fixing aminoplasts by the wet method on cellulose-containing fibrous materials having a low swelling value is characterized in that the fixation is carried out at a raised temperature and with the use of saturated steam as substantially the sole source of heat. The steam may be used under superatmospheric pressure. The term " cellulose - containing fibrous material having a low swelling value " denotes natural cellulose fibres, the swelling value of which has not been enhanced by chemical treatment. Examples describe the impregnation of cotton yarn with an aqueous solution of a condensation product of melamine and formaldehyde followed by treatment with steam under pressure.
