Abstract

Cellulose acetylated to contain from two-thirds to one and two-thirds acetyl groups per glucose residue is treated with an aqueous solution of dicyandiamide to improve its heat resistance. Cotton, wood-pulp, regenerated cellulose and paper may be acetylated and treated. A 0.1 to 5.0 per cent. solution of dicyandiamide may be used and the impregnated material may be pressed or centrifuged to retain 0.1 to 3 per cent. of dicyandiamide calculated on the weight of the cellulose acetate. The treated material may be dried in the usual manner. In an example a cotton fabric acetylated according to example 2 of Specification 280,493, [Class 15 (ii)], is impregnated with a 1 per cent. aqueous solution of dicyandiamide for 5 minutes at 50 DEG C., squeezed to 100 per cent. pick-up and dried at 100 to 105 DEG C. Specification 525,265 also is referred to.
