Abstract
Cellulosic textile material is impregnated with an aqueous mixture containing starch, a water soluble thermosetting ketoneformaldehyde condensation product and an alkali at a pH of over 10.0 and is thereafter heated in an atmosphere of steam to insolubilize the impregnation mixture. The starch may be pearl starch or a dextrin and the alkali may be sodium carbonate of hydroxide. In an example a cotton cloth is pretreated with steam and caustic alkali, washed and treated with a starch-acetoneformaldehyde mixture, steamed at 105 DEG C. bleached with hydrogen peroxide, dried without tension and calendered. In another example an unbleached cotton cloth is impregnated with an aqueous solution of a starch-acetone-formaldehyde mixture at a pH of 11.8, steamed at 220 DEG F. and bleached with an alkaline peroxide.
