Abstract

Cellulosic materials are pre-treated with sulphuric acid of less than parchmentizing strength and are then treated with sulphuric acid of parchmentizing strength without substantial solution of the cellulose. Treatment with the stronger acid may be continued until a product suitable for moulding is obtained. After the parchmentizing treatment, the acid may be removed by washing or by neutralization. The treated material may be pressed and dried so as to form a mass which is hard and light, is a good electrical insulator, and is capable of being moulded under heat and pressure. Cellulose fibres in the form of sheets of paper may be subjected to the acid treatment and then laminated and pressed together. Fibres, yarns, films, scoured sawdust, wood pulp, macerated paper, or knitted or woven cellulosic fabrics may be treated. In an example, several sheets of bleached or unbleached kraft paper are individually dipped in sulphuric acid of 90 DEG Tw. for a few minutes. Excess of liquid is then squeezed out and the sheets are dipped in sulphuric acid of 160 DEG Tw. for about 1 minute at room temperature. The sheets are washed and then laminated, pressed, and dried to form a hard mass capable of being moulded. Formaldehyde may be added to the strong sulphuric acid.
