Abstract

In the refining of wood pulp, the pulp is treated with a hot caustic alkali solution containing tall oil and a non-ionic detergent comprising a polyglycol ether of an alkyl-phenol. The treatment reduces the resinous content of the resulting cellulose, and is preferably effected after the normal chlorinating and bleaching steps in the sulphite process. The treatment is preferably effected on the pulp as a slurry having 2-20 per cent dry pulp content with a solution containing 3-25 per cent sodium hydroxide, 0.1-5 per cent tall oil and 0.1-1 per cent non-ionic detergent at 80-170 DEG C. for 10-240 minutes. In an example, sulphite wood pulp which had been chlorinated and bleached was formed into a slurry containing 8 per cent pulp with an aqueous solution containing 12 per cent sodium hydroxide. To the slurry was added 0.3 per cent of the mixed ether obtained by condensing nonyl-phenol with ethylene oxide in a molar ratio of 1:10, and 1 per cent of tall oil comprising 66-71 per cent fatty acids, 25-30 per cent rosin acids and 2-4 per cent of sterols and the like. The slurry was heated to 140 DEG C. in 25 minutes and maintained at that temperature for 20 minutes. The pulp was then washed and scoured with aqueous sulphur dioxide solution to a pH value of 5.5. Its alpha-cellulose content and viscosity were high whereas its content of material soluble in an alcohol/benzene mixture had been reduced to 0.03 per cent.
