Abstract

518,887. Obtaining pulp from wood, bamboo &c. AKT.-.GES. FUR HALBZELLSTOFFINDUSTRIE. Sept. 6, 1938, No. 26066. Convention date, Sept. 6, 1937. [Class 2 (ii)] In producing pulp from wood, bamboo, straw, grasses and other cellulose-containing plants by treating the materials with hot alkaline liquids, the initial material is first subjected in the dry state to a vacuum, then heated with alkali under pressure, the pressure suddenly released, and the mass left under atmospheric pressure until disintegration is complete. The object of the treatment is to reduce the degree of comminution necessary and to shorten the time of treatment. A suitable degree of vacuum referred to is 700 m.m. of mercury, the alkaline lye may contain lime up to 5 per cent. of the weight of the raw material in a 10 per cent. solution with or without an addition of caustic soda, the pressure is quickly raised to about 1.5 atmospheres and released. and the material then maintained at about 80‹ C. for 90 to 120 minutes.
