Abstract

374,047. Preparation of cellulose from raw materials. DREYFUS, H., 22, Hanover Square, London. Nov. 26, 1930, No. 35640. [Class 96.] Wood, straw, grasses, or other lignified materials containing substantially all of their original lignin content are subjected to a treatment which comprises developing gaseous or vaporous pressure within the materials and suddenly releasing the same, whilst avoiding any substantial modification of the lignin content. The materials may be subjected to a preliminary treatment in order to dissolve out resins and the like, e.g. by means of dilute caustic soda. The pressure may be developed by the vaporization of liquid within the materials, or by impregnating with substances which liberate a gas on heating, e.g. a solution of sodium bicarbonate, and heating the impregnated material in a closed vessel. The sudden release of the developed pressure causes the materials to be opened up and disintegrated, and they may then be subjected to any pulping process. In an example, wood chips are extracted with a cold 5 per cent solution of caustic soda, washed, dried, and impregnated with sodium bicarbonate solution preferably under pressure. The chips are then heated in a closed vessel to 130-140‹ C, and the developed pressure released as suddenly as possible. The resulting material is washed and pulped.
