Abstract

280,629. Nanji, D. R. Aug. 17, 1926. Pulp, preparation of.-In the preparation of pulp, for paper making and the like, from plant, woody, and other cellulosic material an alkaline solution of up to 4 per cent strength is used and the material heated therewith to high temperaures at high pressure approximating to 10 atmospheres for about half an hour. By this treatment the material is delignified and the product may be readily bleached. Materials containing pectins and sugars are first treated with a pectin solvent such a dilute solution of a salt of an alkali, or of ammonia, in order to avoid staining. Impure celluloses obtained by other methods, such as sulphite pulp, soda pulp, or the like may be treated. In treating bagasse from sugar cane, the fibres are first disintegrated by crushing rollers, and the mass mixed with 4 per cent caustic soda solution and heated to 185‹ C. for about 1 hour. The sugar and pectin in the bagasse may first be removed with a 0.5 per cent solution of ammonium sulphate. In treating grasses and similar bulky materials, the non-cellulosic material is first hydrolysed and the alkali required thus economized by a preliminary acid treatment preferably with a 0.4 per cent solution of sulphuric acid at a pressure of 4-6 atmospheres for 30-60 minutes.
