Abstract

Pulp suitable for paper-making is obtained from flax or hemp tow by subjecting the material to a cooking operation in a digester with a solution of water in a proportion of about 2 1/2 to 4 times the dry weight of the fibres, and 14-20 per cent sodium hydroxide and 1-4 per cent of sulphur, the percentages being based on the dry weight of the tow, and washing the cooked material to remove shive fibre and water-soluble impurities. The tow may be taken in the wet state, after washing to remove soluble impurities, and cooked in a rotary digester at raised pressure. After washing the cooked material, it may be dried and stored, or it may be subjected to a bleaching operation.
