Abstract

1,230,576. Reconstituted tobacco. CARRERAS Ltd. 22 Aug., 1968 [22 May, 1967], No. 23588/67. Heading A2C. [Also in Division D2] Tobacco sheet for use as a wrapper or binder to enclose a threshed or cut tobacco in a smoking product is made by a method including crushing tobacco main stalk and then treating it with caustic soda, washing it to remove all traces of the caustic soda and then milling the stalk and subsequently screening it, treating the retained fibres to shorten any long fibres and then making the pulp up into a sheet on a paper making machine. Main stalk material, after crushing, is cut into 2 to 3 inch lengths, digested by heating under pressure with four times its weight of NaOH liquor preferably after removing surplus dust, washed to remove all traces of NaOH, the resultant pulp disintegrated in a Hydrapulper to produce a dispersion which is beaten to disintegrate any remaining long fibres, and after removing all very fine material therefrom the pulp is diluted to about 2% and formed into a sheet on a paper-making machine that includes provision for back water recirculation. The tobacco sheet is preferably treated with a concentrated extract produced from a cooked dispersion of tobacco mid-rib stems and/or offal. The extract may be applied at the wet end of the paper-making machine or by using a size press at the dry end during the sheet making process, or after sheet making by using a coating machine to provide dip, surface or gravure coating. Gravure-type printing may be used to reproduce a veinlike appearance on the surface of the sheet.
