Abstract

213,003. McRae, W. A. R. M. Dec. 22, 1922. Pulp, preparation of.-In order to overcome the difficulty, arising from the differences in age, growth, and season of cropping, in the preparation of an uniform cellulose from bamboo, bagasse &c., the raw material is subjected to a preliminary hydro-mechanical operation by which a pecto-ligno-cellulose of substantially standard quality is produced, from which the pecto and ligno constitutents may be removed separately, or together, in known manner with caustic soda or other suitable material. By the hydro mechanical operation, consisting of a beating and opening up in water, non-fibrous carbohydrates such as parenchyma, pith, starch, and sugar, are separated from the fibres and washed away. The operation may be conveniently carried out in apparatus such as is described in 213,004. The separated non-fibrous material is subsequently collected, dried, and used for fuel in a sugar factory. Bagasse from the same factory may be similarly treated, yielding a pecto-ligno-cellulose and also fuel. Sizal, agave, rhea, hemp, manilla, flax, and like materials may be treated according to the present process. Specifications 16682/12, 17834/14, and 180,097 are also referred to.
