Retting. - In obtaining fibres from esparto grass, alfa, and similar fibrous materials, the leaves in the fresh or dried state are retted in the usual pond or by boiling under pressure with alkali carbonate, soluble glass, alkali fluoride, or other known retting agent, washed, dried, then flattened and opened by crushing between a pair of rollers or a roller and a flat surface, and finally heckled.
