Abstract

<PICT:0369586/IV/1> Textile materials made of or containing acetate or other organic esters of cellulose are partially saponified in a uniform manner, so as to raise their safe ironing temperature by treatment successively with alkali solutions of diminishing alkalinity, the first solution having an alkalinity not less than that of a 1 per cent caustic soda solution. Instead of caustic alkalies, alkali carbonates, silicates, or sulphides may be used. Good results are given by the use of a solution of alkalinity corresponding to 4 to 7 per cent of caustic soda, preferably at room temperature, followed by a solution of alkalinity corresponding to 2 to 4 per cent of caustic soda, preferably at 70-85 DEG C., and then washing with water at 70-85 DEG C. The fabrics may be dyed before treatment or dyed or printed afterwards. They may contain also cotton or regenerated cellulose. The fabric may pass through tanks containing the alkaline solutions and then through washing tanks between which it may be sprayed. In another apparatus, the fabric passes under a roller 22 in strong alkali solution, between padding rollers 23 and around a compensator 26, and then through tanks 28, 30, 33 containing weak alkali solution and running water; sprays are shown at 31, 34.
