Abstract
In the treatment with caustic alkalies of yarns, fabrics, &c made from regenerated cellulose or mixtures thereof with natural cellulose or other fibres, (including fabrics that have been coated or impregnated with a film of regenerated cellulose), the regenerated cellulose is protected from damage by adding to the wash water a carbonate or bicarbonate of sodium, potassium, or ammonium, or a mixture thereof, with or without sodium chloride. Thus, treatment of the material with caustic soda solution of mercerizing strength may be followed by washing with a 5-10 per cent solution of soda ash at about 65 DEG C. Alternatively, the material may be treated with carbon dioxide after the caustic alkali treatment and then washed with water, which may or may not contain an alkali carbonate or bicarbonate and/or sodium chloride. Washing may be effected under tension or not, and the used wash water may be causticized or used for scouring. Specification 323,307, [Class 15 (ii), Dyeing, Processes &c. for], is referred to.
