Abstract

Animal fibres are protected from the action of alkalis in processes such as washing wool, degumming silk, mercerizing cotton in half-wool or half-silk fabrics, and fulling wool by adding one or more of the following substances, in the proportion of not less than 3 per cent by weight of the goods treated, namely sugars such as glucose, fructose &c. and sulphite-cellulose waste liquor or the active constituents thereof. Examples include washing wool and degumming silk with or without the simultaneous mercerization of cotton, using as protective agents maltose, lactose, sulphite-cellulose liquor and sodium ligninsulphonate. The degumming of silk in presence of glucose is disclaimed.ALSO:Animal or mixed fibres including skins and leather are protected from the action of alkalis by adding one or more of the following substances, in the proportion of not less than 3 per cent by weight, of the goods treated, namely sugars such as glucose, lactose, fructose, &c. and sulphitecellulose waste liquor or the active constituents thereof. Examples include dyeing animal and mixed fibres with vat and sulphur dyestuffs, the so-called killing of skins and dyeing skins with Ursol P and D and hydrogen peroxide, using as protective agents maltose, lactose, sodium lignin-sulphonate and sulphite cellulose liquor.
