Abstract

A process for bleaching cellulosic textile materials comprises passing the goods continuously and rapidly through a bath of a hydrocarbon or chlorinated hydrocarbon, preferably in open width, and then rapidly through two baths of an aqueous alkaline solution of a peroxygen compound, the first of such baths having a pH of 11-12 and an alkalinity corresponding to at least 7.2 grams per litre of sodium hydroxide and the second bath having a pH of 9.5-11 and an alkalinity less than that corresponding to 7.2 grams of sodium hydroxide per litre, the treatment in each of the two peroxygen compound baths being followed by a steaming treatment. In a modification of the process the materials may be immersed in either the first or the second peroxygen compound bath or in both for a prolonged period at elevated temperature, the baths used for such prolonged treatment having an alkalinity corresponding to at least 3.1 grams per litre of sodium hydroxide for the first bath and less than 3.1 grams per litre of sodium hydroxide for the second bath. The alkalinity of the first peroxygen compound bath which is followed by steaming may correspond to 10-15 grams of sodium hydroxide per litre. The peroxygen compound may be sodium peroxide, which may be partially neutralized with sulphuric acid or an acid salt, or sodium perborate or percarbonate or hydrogen peroxide, the alkalinity being adjusted with an alkali. The passage through the peroxygen compound baths followed by steaming may be of 20 minutes duration, the fabrics being steamed for 15-30 minutes or for a few minutes followed by retention of the goods at 90-100 DEG C. in a J-box to give a total steaming and retention time of 15-30 minutes. In the prolonged treatment the baths may be at 60 DEG -90 DEG C. and the duration of treatment may be 2-4 hours. The bleaching baths may include sodium silicate and a neutral or anionic wetting agent. The first bath may consist of trichlorethylene or perchlorethylene, which may be contained in several enclosed vessels through which the solvent is circulated in an opposite direction to the travel of the cloth. The cloth may be freed from solvent by hot air drying, by steaming or by passage through hot water, the water being removed by mangling.
