Abstract
982, 518. Cleaning, bleaching and shrink proofing cotton fibres; apparatus. SANDO IRON WORKS CO. Ltd. May 5,1961 [Aug. 29,1960], No. 16510/61. Headings D1L and D1P. Yarns, threads, fabrics and like textile materials consisting wholly or partly of cotton fibres are cleaned and bleached and may be rendered shrink resistant by impregnating them preferably after singling and/or desizing with a bleaching solution comprising an alkali metachlorite, an acid, e.g. hydrochloric, acetic, formic and sulphuric acids, and an anionic surface active agent, e.g. alkyl-aryl sulphonates, subjecting the impregnated material to the action of the solution at an elevated temperature. Further impregnating the material with an alkaline solution of hydrogen peroxide and subjecting the material to the action of the solution at an elevated temperature. The impregnated material is preferably subjected to the action of the bleaching solution and/or the alkaline hydrogen peroxide solution at 70-100C. for 10-20 minutes. The hydrogen peroxide solution may be rendered alkaline by the addition of an alkali metal silicate and small quantities of alkali metal hydroxides maybe added to avoid possible hydrolysis of the silicate. Textile materials containing cotton in admixture with synthetic fibres may be treated. As shown in Fig. 1 the clotch may be passed round swivel tension bar 1 and guide roller 2, fed through electro operated cross guider 3 to a washing vessel 4 and after washing passed through curved expander 5 and squeezing mangle 6 to remove excess liquid. It is then passed through chlorite impregnating vessel 7, over press rollers 8-9, through squeezing mangle 10 to the reaction tower 15, 16, 18 where it is heated by steam issuing from nozzles 11 and passed over feed rollers 12 to swing rollers 13 and folding plates 14. It is then passed downwardly on to several stages of a roller couple each forming a rotatable reception table 17, to a boiling chlorite bleaching bath contained in the lower portion of the tower 18. The cloth is then washed in washing vessels 22, 22<SP>1</SP>, 22<SP>11</SP> and 221<SP>11</SP> and impregnated with hydrogen peroxide in vessel 30 before passing to tower 31 having a similar construction and arrangement to the first tower. It is treated with boiling water in the lower part of tower 31, washed in vessels 32, 36 and dried by passage through drier 37.
