Abstract
Cotton is bleached in the cold by subjecting the material first to an oxidizing bleach with hypochlorite, then to an intermediate treatment with a solution of an alkali and finally to a further oxidizing bleach with hypochlorite. In examples (1) raw cotton piece goods desized by means of "Diastafor" are bleached with a sodium hypochlorite solution in the presence of a wetting agent resistant to cotton such as the amyl alcohol ester of sulphophthalic acid. The goods are rinsed and treated with a sodium hydroxide solution containing Marseilles soap and finally with a hypochlorite bath. (2) A patterned fabric bearing vat dyestuff effects is treated with javelle liquor, then with a sodium hydroxide solution and finally with a hypochlorite solution. Specification 399,319 is referred to.
