Abstract

Natural silk, in materials containing it, is degummed by subjecting the materials to a pretreatment to soften the gum and thereafter to a degumming operation. The pretreatment is effected at a comparatively low temperature with a sodium hydroxide solution of a concentration between 2 and 12 gms. per litre or a solution of equivalent alkalinity. The alkali of the pretreatment bath may be of sodium carbonate, trisodium phosphate, or caustic soda, and be used at ordinary temperatures. The degumming treatment may be in a bath of soap solution, e.g., 5 gms. per litre, with or without small quantities of caustic or other alkalies, e.g., soluble organic or inorganic salts of the alkali metals, e.g., silicates, borates, carbonates, phenolates or cresolates for 1 to 2 hours at a temperature not exceeding 80 DEG C. Wetting and scouring agents, such as sulphonated oils or other sulphonic acids or sulphuric esters may be added either to the pretreatment or degumming baths. The degumming bath, e.g., a 100 : 1 bath, may be obtained by dilution of the pretreatment bath, e.g., a 10 : 1 bath, but it is advisable where the degumming bath is to contain much soap to add it after the pretreatment. The materials may be of silk alone or silk in association with cellulose esters or other natural or artificial fibres. In examples, (1) hanks of a mixed silk and cellulose acetate yarn are treated in the cold for 10 minutes in a 10 : 1 bath containing 20 gms. anhydrous sodium carbonate and 20 gms. isopropylnaphthalene sodium sulphonate per litre. The bath is then diluted to 100 : 1 ratio, 5 gms. of soap per litre is added, the temperature raised to 80 DEG C., and the yarn treated for 1 hour; (2) silk hosiery containing 10 per cent of cellulose acetate effect threads is pretreated in the cold for 10 minutes in a 10 : 1 bath containing 10 gms. soda ash and 10 gms, isopropyl-naphthalene sodium sulphonate per litre. Dilution and degumming are as in (1); (3) a cr<\>zepe fabric of equal parts of a cellulose acetate warp and a highly twisted natural silk weft is immersed for 10 minutes in a cold 10 gms. per litre caustic soda solution. It is then rinsed and immersed in a bath containing, per litre, 5 gms. textile soap, 1 gm. soda ash and 1 gm. isopropylnaphthalene sodium sulphonate. The temperature is slowly raised to 80 DEG C. and maintained thereat for 2 hours or till degumming is complete.
