Abstract

Textile plants and vegetable matter are degummed by treating with a simple unsubstituted naphthalene sulphonic acid, with or without common salt, and neutralizing in an alkaline or a soap bath, or in a mixture of such baths, the product obtained being suitable for spinning or for manufacture into paper pulp. In an example, crude hemp fibres from which the outer tegument has been removed by stripping or peeling, are soaked, and then immersed in a bath containing equal parts of sodium chloride and a naphthalene sulphonic acid, of strength 4 DEG B<\>ae. The fibres are allowed to steep for about 12 hours, and are then washed in running water and neutralized with a weak soap solution containing a small quantity of soda ash. The temperature of the bath may be raised to 60 DEG C. for textile fibres for spinning purposes, the strength of the bath being reduced to 1 DEG B<\>ae. If paper-pulp is being prepared the temperature may be raised to 100 DEG C. Other fibres such as sisal hemp, flax, ramie, alfalfa, and jute may be used. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 (3) (a) comprises also the application of the treatment for "stripping" of spun and raw threads and fabrics in order to prepare them for dyeing and bleaching, the "stripping" constituting a second degumming. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
