Abstract
Bast fibres are prepared for spinning by subjecting the stalks first to a mechanical decortication and subsequently to a chemical treatment. The stalks are decorticated by alternately kneading them between fluted or corrugated press rolls having rounded flutes and squeezing them between flattening rollers so that a longitudinal displacement of the shive on the fibres is effected, the decorticated fibres being then steeped in a boiling soap solution or other alkali liquor to which a volatile fat solvent, e.g. petroleum, benzine, alcohol or the like has been added. The fibres are then subjected to a short after-treatment under vacuum and at a low temperature in a bath containing the above-mentioned volatile fat solvents in conjunction with dehydrating agents, e.g. glycerine or weak lye. A bleaching agent may be added to this last bath. Specifications 10465/05, [Class 120], 146,139, [Class 120 (i)], 367,116, and 383,627, [both in Group IX], are referred to.
