Abstract

306,067. British Celanese, Ltd., and Ellis, G. H. Nov. 15, 1927. Degumming silk.-The degumming of natural silk, in yarn, fabric, or other form, either alone or associated with cotton, linen, wool, or artificial silk, is effected by the use of an alkaline liquor having a pH value not exceeding 10.5 or whose pH value has been adjusted so as not to exceed 10.5. Any suitable alkalies may be employed, the soluble organic or inorganic salts of the alkalies such as silicates, borates, carbonate, phenolates, and cresolates of lithium, sodium and potassium being suitable. Hydroxides such as caustic soda or potash may be used, but baths containing soaps or sulphonated soaps or oils are preferred. The process is particularly applicable to the treatment of yarns, fabrics, or goods containing natural silk mixed or associated with cellulose esters, more especially cellulose acetate, the conditions and more particularly the temperature being adjusted so as to delustre the cellulose acetate wholly or partially. Either liquor or foam baths may be used and the materials treated may be simultaneously dved.
