Abstract

546,529. Treating textiles with liquids; bleaching processes. BLEACHERS' ASSOCIATION, Ltd., PARKER, C. S., FARRINGTON, F., and STUBBS, A. E. Dec. 7, 1940, No. 17419. [Class 15 (ii)] The tendency to shrink and felt of a textile material containing wool or other animal fibres capable of shrinking and felting, is reduced by treating the material at any stage in its manufacture with an aqueous solution of alkali metal hydroxide of a concentration of at least 35 per cent. in the case of caustic soda and 50 per cent. in the case of caustic potash, and for a time of at least 20 minutes when the temperature is not more than 20‹ C., but which time may be less when the temperature is higher and the minimum concentration is correspondingly higher. The alkali metal hydroxide may be replaced in part by a highly soluble alkali metal salt of a weak acid, e.g. a zincate, aluminate, silicate, tungstate, borate, stannate, stannite, sulphide, or beryllate. The textile material may be in the uncombed state, or in the state of slubbing, roving, yarn, thread, or fabric. The wool, mohair, or other animal fibres may be mixed with rayon, whether regenerated cellulose or a cellulose ester or ether, or natural silk. Cellulose esters undergo some hydrolysis during the process. The process may be carried out before or after dyeing or printing. Bleaching agents such as sodium chlorite or sodium hypochlorite may be incorporated in the solution of alkali hydroxide. When the treatment is carried out at raised. temperatures, more concentrated solutions of alkali are required to obtain similar results. In an example, woollen fabric is treated at 20‹ C. with a 37 per cent. NaOH solution for one hour. It is then washed, rinsed in dilute acetic acid and dried. In another example, wool fabric is treated for 20 minutes with a 69 per cent. NaOH solution at just above the melting point of the solution, i.e. 64‹ C. The treatment may be carried out by immersion or padding. After the padding operation, the material may be run on to a roller and protected from the air. for one hour, after which it is washed.
