Abstract

549,986. Treating textiles with liquids ; dyeing processes. BLEACHERS' ASSOCIATION, Ltd., PARKER, C. S., FARRINGTON, F., and STUBBS, A. E. Jan. 22, 1942, No. 495/41. [Class 15 (ii)] Textile materials consisting of mixed fibres or fabrics of wool with cotton, artificial silk, or other cellulose fibres, are treated with aqueous alkali under conditions of time, temperature, and concentration required for conferring increased affinity for dyestuffs and/or enhanced lustre upon the cotton, artificial silk, or other cellulosic fibres, degradation of the wool being reduced or inhibited by the presence in the aqueous alkali of a water-soluble inert salt, particularly an alkali metal chloride, nitrite, or thiocyanate. The inert salt is one which does not react with water, caustic alkali, or the fibres, under the conditions of treatment. The caustic alkali may be a hydroxide, zincate, or aluminate of sodium or potassium. Instead of mixed materials containing wool, mixed materials containing other animal fibres such as mohair may be treated. In an example, a fabric of wool and cotton is mercerized with a solution of caustic soda containing sodium chloride or nitrite. The solution may contain 35 grams caustic soda per 100 c.c. of solution and may be saturated with respect to sodium chloride, or it may contain 9 grams caustic soda per 100 c.c. of solution and be saturated with respect to sodium thiocyanate. If the treatment is sufficiently prolonged the potential shrinkage of the wool is diminished. The process may be applied to mixed materials in the form of yarn, fibre, hank, or piece goods.
