Abstract

549,678. Treating textiles with liquids &c. ; bleaching and dyeing processes. BLEACHERS' ASSOCIATION, Ltd., PARKER, C. S., FARRINGTON, F., and STUBBS, A. E. May 21, 1941, No. 6492. [Class 15 (ii)] The shrinkability of fabrics containing animal hair fibres such as wool or mohair is reduced by a modification of the process of Specification 546,529, wherein a part of the alkali metal hydroxide is replaced by an alkali metal halite or hypohalite. A solution equivalent to at least 35 per cent. by weight of caustic soda or at least 50 per cent. of caustic potash is used. The solution may contain 10 or 30 per cent. by volume of 53‹ Tw. sodium hypochlorite solution, sufficient caustic soda being added to give a specific gravity of 85‹ Tw. The concentrations and temperatures are preferably so chosen that the time required for the treatment is about one hour. The treatment improves the whiteness and the affinity for acid dyestuffs. Hypobromite may be used instead of hypochlorite. Sodium chlorite may be used. The process may be carried out before dyeing or printing. The wool may be treated at any stage of the manufacture. It may be treated while still in the form of yarn or slubbing or in the form of knitted or woven fabrics.
