Abstract

316,265. Robertson, T. E., (Assignee of Spectrum Dyes Proprietary, Ltd,). July 26, 1928, [Convention date]. Bleaching, processes and materials for.-Jute, hemp, &c. is bleached by treatment successively with a weak chlorine solution and solution of sulphur dioxide or other reducing agent containing sulphur and oxygen without the use of intermediate chemical treatment. The fibre is first treated with a cold solution prepared from bleaching powder and acetic acid, and then, after washing, with a boiling solution of sodium hydrosulphite to which sulphonated castor oil after a time may be added. Or bisulphite of zinc may be used for the second solution. After washing and drying, the fibre may be fast dyed with any normal direct dye by employing soda ash, sodium chloride and sodium sulphate in the boiling dye bath. The process may be repeated.
